The Earliest Europeans to Canada
The first European exploration of Canada was around 1497. It was an expedition led by John Cabot. He was also the first to draw a detailed map of the East coast of the Canadian region. The Icelandic Vikings (the colonizers of Greenland around a thousand years ago) reached Newfoundland and Labrador. Canada still has the remains of this early settlement (called L’Anse Aux Meadows). It is a World Heritage Site now.
